** 2009 PANZ Conference**
The 2009 PANZ conference will be held on Monday 31 August and Tuesday 1 September 2009 at the Wellington Convention Centre.
The theme is ‘Distinct Communities, Diverse Populations, Different Futures: Towards 2030′.
Preparations are well underway for this year’s conference. The closing date for abstracts has passed and we have received a rich smorgasbord of topics. The conference programme is now available and it is shaping up to be a full and fascinating two days.
Seven key-note speakers have been confirmed and we are pleased to announce that the conference will be opened by Hon. Pansy Wong, Minister for Ethnic Affairs and Minister of Women’s Affairs.
The conference organising committee is now calling for posters, these are to be in with us by 31 July please.
** PANZ Schools Essay Competition is now open **
This schools-based competition to increase awareness of population issues among future citizens of Aotearoa / New Zealand is open to secondary school students in New Zealand who study geography, mathematics / statistics and social studies at year 11 and above. To participate, a student must write an essay not exceeding 2,000 words on a population-related topic of their choice.
First prize is $400, second prize is $300 and third prize is $200.
The deadline for submissions has been extended to 31 July 2009.
** Statistics New Zealand Jacoby prize is now open **
This competition is awarded annually by PANZ for the best essay on a population topic written during a course of university study. The competition is open to university students throughout the country.
The prize includes $400 from Statistics New Zealand, and publication of the winning essay in the New Zealand Population Review. Winners also receive a years subscription to PANZ and a copy of the latest New Zealand offical yearbook. The prize will be presented at the 2009 PANZ conference.
